Former Republican Gov. William Milliken of Michigan is reportedly endorsing Hillary Clinton for president, saying GOP nominee Donald Trump hasn't embraced America's commitment to "tolerance, civility and equality."

In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, Milliken called his choice clear because he feels so "strongly" about the future of the country.

"This nation has long prided itself on its abiding commitments to tolerance, civility and equality," the statement declares.

"We face a critically important choice in this year's presidential election that will define whether we maintain our commitment to those ideals or embark on a path that has doomed other governments and nations throughout history."

"I am saddened and dismayed that the Republican Party this year has nominated a candidate who has repeatedly demonstrated that he does not embrace those ideals."

The Free Press notes it's not the first time Milliken has picked a Democrat over a candidate from his own party; he endorsed former Gov. Jennifer Granholm in her 2006 campaign for governor.

Milliken now joins a group of Republicans who've announced they don't plan to support their party's nominee, The Hill reports, including Frank Lavin, a former political director for President Ronald Reagan, who wrote in an op-ed for CNN that Trump was an "emperor who wears no clothes."
