Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore is an "abomination to the Republican Party, and the American people deserve better than his election," Rep. Will Hurd said Monday, while listing places where Republicans and Democrats can agree.

"I disagree with President Trump on a recent thing — Roy Moore," the Texas Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

"I think Roy Moore is an abomination to the Republican Party, and that's one thing Republicans and Democrats agree on."

Trump's voice was heard on robocalls over the weekend in Alabama, and on Friday he called for Moore's election, saying in both cases that Moore's vote is needed in the Senate.

"Alabama deserves better and the American people deserve better," said Hurd, a former CIA officer and a member of the House Intelligence, Homeland Security, and Oversight committees. He also pointed out that Alabama GOP Sen. Richard Selby went on record on Sunday as saying he can't support Moore's candidacy.

Hurd, meanwhile, said he's concentrating on what his constituents want from him, not what President Donald Trump wants.

"My philosophy is simple," Hurd said. "Agree when you agree. Disagree when you disagree and work for the things your constituents sent you up here [to do]."

Hurd said that the only thing to do big things in Washington is to work together in a bipartisan fashion.

"We have examples of when we've done big things," Hurd said. "The 21st Century Cures Act, saying we're going to double down on stopping cancer and Parkinson's, we were able to do it when we were together."

Despite all the news about various matters, he added, "despite what you see above the fold on newspaper, when I crisscross my district, people want us to work together and solve problems. That's what resonates."

Hurd said he also disagrees with Trump on the need for a border wall with Mexico.

"I have 820 miles of the border," he said about the region he represents. "It's more border than any other member of Congress. Building a wall from sea to shining sea is the most expensive and least effective way."

Hurd also has been pushing for a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as part of the year-end funding bill, and disagrees with other Republicans who say a controversial decision such as DACA shouldn't be thrown into the mix.

"I'm completing my third year in Congress," said Hurd. "I've learned there's nothing that focuses Congress’ collective mind more than the end of the year spending."

The nation's Dreamers have only known the United States for most of their lives, said Hurd, and most are either working or going to school in the United States.

"I know there is a lot of conversations going on with my Republican colleagues and Democratic colleagues on funding a joint solution for this," he said.

"I think there's going to be some border security. We don't have operational control of our border. Building a wall is not the way. You should be using technology. I call it the smart wall. I think this is a way we got to get this done, because it's an important issue for our country."
