Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, a frequent GOP critic of President Donald Trump, picked up his attacks after the president shared a slowed-down video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

"You shouldn't disseminate information that you know is ultimately doctored," Hurd told CBS's "Face the Nation."

"And this is going to escalate this debate and this fight."

A video shared on social media that appeared to have been digitally altered to slow the speech of the House Speaker at a recent public appearance made Pelosi appear impaired. Trump shared a Fox News video from "Lou Dobbs Tonight" showing verbal pauses.

"We have old laws to decide how you handle disinformation," Rep. Hurd told CBS host Margaret Brennan. "You have leaders that don't understand how this technology can be used in the future.

"This goes back into this whole conversation around disinformation and how are we dealing with it, and it's not just the government alone. It's not just the social media companies. It's also the media, academia involved in trying to do this."
