Ahead of a meeting on Wednesday afternoon between President Donald Trump and congressional leaders of both parties on border security, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called a plan by House Democrats to reopen the government a "non-starter," The Hill reported.

Deriding the proposal as "the Pelosi plan," Sanders said it "fails to secure the border and puts the needs of other countries above the needs of our own."

She added that Democrats have refused to compromise, while "Trump made a serious, good faith offer to Democrats to open the government, address the crisis at our border, and protect all Americans."

On Tuesday, Trump invited leaders in both parties to the White House for a briefing on border security on Wednesday amid the ongoing partial shutdown, which is in its second week.

Pelosi responded to the invitation by tweeting that Trump “has given Democrats a great opportunity to show how we will govern responsibly & quickly pass our plan to end the irresponsible #TrumpShutdown – just the first sign of things to come in our new Democratic Majority committed to working #ForThePeople.”

The partial shutdown came after congressmen failed to come to an agreement on funding for border security, with the president demanding $5 billion for a wall on the southern border and Democrats instead offering $1.3 billion for overall border security.

On Thursday, Democrats will take control of the House and are expected to immediately pass a bill to reopen the government without providing the $5 billion Trump has demanded, according to CNN.

The vote would be on a bipartisan package of six Senate spending bills and a stopgap measure to re-open the Department of Homeland Security at its current funding levels until Feb. 8.
