White House: Trump 'Very Clear' He's Against Shutdown

President Donald Trump is making it "very clear" that he and his administration do not want a government shutdown, and Democrats should not play politics over passing a continuing resolution to keep funding available, White House director of strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp said Thursday.

"I think that it's very important to know that the Democrats shouldn't play these shutdown politics," Schlapp told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"It's very harmful and obviously what's more harmful is for our national security, especially for funding for our troops."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is playing a game with Republicans and Trump, she continued.

"They've come in with a fair deal, saying, 'look, you wanted a long-term reauthorization on the CHIP [Children's Health Insurance] program," Schlapp said. "Let's work together to ensure that we can pass the short-term spending bill. I think that's where we're hopeful that we're going to get to that."

She added that she thinks it's "very unfortunate" that Democrats are planning to reject the continuing resolution unless it includes a solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"Obviously, the president and his team in good faith are willing to work on a DACA deal, said Schlapp. "It's why the president brought in members from both the House and the Senate Republicans and Democrats.

"What he asked for specifically was a bicameral, bipartisan framework. That's obviously not what he got when Sen. [Dick] Durbin and Sen. [Lindsey] Graham came to the White House."
