The White House is reportedly planning to demand deep cuts in legal immigration and other changes in exchange for its support to fix an Obama-era program that protects young illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.

Politico reported Thursday the approach is risky, and is likely to displease both Democrats and Republicans, potentially sinking the deal.

White House immigration adviser Stephen Miller is putting the proposal together, which includes cutting legal immigration by half over the next decade, Politico reported, citing unnamed sources.

"Handing Stephen Miller the pen on any [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] deal after the revolt from their base is the quickest way to blow it up," an unnamed Democratic Senate aide complained, Politico reported.

According to Politico, Miller was upset after President Donald Trump's working dinner with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., last month about a deal to fix DACA — and has been working to bring Trump back to a more hard-line stance.

The administration is expected to send its immigration "wish-list" to Congress in the coming days, Politico reported — which include billions of dollars in border security and money for detention beds and more immigration judges.
