White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders addressed the Rob Porter situation Monday by saying Americans accused of crimes deserve due process and President Donald Trump supports victims of domestic violence.

Less than a week after Porter was forced out of his West Wing job over allegations he was physically and verbally abusive toward his two ex-wives, Sanders was peppered with questions about what the White House knew and how Porter was able to work in such a secure environment with allegations leveled against him.

"The president takes domestic violence very seriously and believes allegations need to be investigated thoroughly," Sanders said. "The president supports victims of domestic violence. We've addressed this extensively and we have nothing more to add at this time."

Reporters continued to pry for more information. Sanders was only slightly more forthcoming.

Sanders said Trump "supports the victims of domestic violence and believes everyone should be treated fairly and with due process."

One reporter inquired about Trump's comment last week in which he wished Porter well in his post-White House career, wondering if the president still feels that way amid the countless media reports that have been written about the saga.

"The president hopes that all Americans can be successful in what they do," Sanders said. "If they've had any issues in the past — I'm not confirming or denying [the Porter allegations] — the president wants success for all Americans. He was elected to serve all Americans and hopes for the best."

In the wake of Porter's exit from the White House, it was reported he was working with a temporary security clearance.

Sanders said the process regarding security clearances for White House employees has been in place for several administrations.

"This is a process that doesn't operate within the White House," she said. "It's handled by our law enforcement and intelligence community. We support that process.

"It's the same process that's been used for decades in previous administrations and we're relying on that process."
