Senior White House officials are exhorting President Donald Trump to fire scandal-ridden Environmental Protection Aagency Chief Scott Pruitt, and the president is warming to the idea, The New York Times reported.
Trump has continued to support his embattled EPA administrator, in spite of the 11 federal investigations that are underway into his spendthrift ways, from first-class travel to extravagant places, to his decadent office overhaul, to unauthorized raises given to top aides and friends as well as living arrangements made with the wife of an energy lobbyist.
A handful of Republican lawmakers have already called for Pruitt's termination, a move that Trump could very well make in the coming weeks, now that Pruitt's deputy has finally been confirmed, the Times reported.
Trump administration officials believe Andrew Wheeler, the former coal lobbyist confirmed just last month, will continue Pruitt's conservative policies and be just as effective as the former Oklahoma attorney general, especially without the baggage that Pruitt has incurred in a short period of time, the Times reports.
Pruitt "has made some major mistakes and doesn’t seem to care that much about them. (Republicans) have a lot of tolerance, but it has its limits," GOP strategist John Feehery told the Times.
In addition to the myriad investigations, at least five of his senior staffers have resigned in the past few weeks, including his chief of security, Pasquale Perrotta, whom many fingered as the one responsible for and enabling Pruitt's high-end travel habits in the name of security.
