President Barack Obama hasn't changed his mind regarding his feelings about Donald Trump, who won the presidential election early Wednesday morning.

"Look, the president's views haven't changed. He stands by what he said on the campaign trail," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday. Obama has called Trump "unfit" to serve as president.

"He had an opportunity to make his argument. He made that argument vigorously," Earnest said. "He made that argument in states all across the country. But the American people decided. The election is over. The president didn’t get to choose his successor, the American people did. And they have chosen President-elect Trump."

Trump visited the White House Thursday and met with Obama for 90 minutes in the Oval Office. Trump's wife Melania was at the White House as well, and she toured the mansion with first lady Michelle Obama.

Obama stressed that he wants to make the transition between administrations as smooth as possible for Trump, a point Earnest underscored.

"President Obama is determined to preside over a transition that gives the incoming president the opportunity to get a running start," Earnest said.

The Obamas cancelled the customary photo-op with the incoming first family on their first visit to the White House, highlighting the contentious election between Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. The Obamas campaigned hard for Clinton and did not hold back their criticisms of Trump.
