Wendy Davis Spokesman Resigns

By    |   Friday, 02 May 2014 06:49 AM EDT

The spokesman and former communications director for Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has resigned as she lags in the polls behind Republican opponent Greg Abbott.

Bo Delp, whose duties changed in a staff shuffle after details of Davis' biography came under fire, said Thursday he's "considering a number of other opportunities in Texas Democratic politics," the San Antonio Express-News reported.

"I am proud of the work I have done, and know that my successor will continue to build on my successes, and my mistakes, to do what is necessary to win in November," Delp said in his letter of resignation, dated Tuesday, the newspaper's website reported.

Zac Petkanas, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's ex-communications director, became Davis' communications director in March while Delp stayed on as deputy communications director.

"After eight months of service, Bo offered his letter of resignation to the campaign. He is leaving the campaign to consider a number of other opportunities in Texas Democratic politics," Petkanas said.

After gaining national attention last June for conducting a 13-hour filibuster against an abortion bill, Davis now trails GOP opponent Greg Abbott by about 12 points, 50.3 percent to 38 percent, according to a Real Clear Politics average of polls. She has lags in support from women voters.
