Texas Democratic State Sen. Wendy Davis has more than doubled her take-home pay over the past three years because of her private law practice, but she has given relatively small amounts to charity.

Davis, who is running for governor against Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, makes $7,200 a year as a state senator, the Texas Tribune reports.

A partner in the law firm she co-founded three years ago, Newby Davis, the senator released her last three tax returns to the Tribune. The firm is based in Fort Worth.

Her adjusted gross income, according to the returns, was $284,183 last year, compared with $235,428 in 2011 and $130,931 the previous year, the Tribune reports.

Davis, whose name went viral thanks to a June filibuster against an abortion bill, sold mutual funds each year, earning $12,000 to $14,000 in capital gains.

Her combined legal work earned Davis $126,043 in 2010 before rising to $223,263 the next year and $275,271 in 2012. Davis also is listed as "of counsel" to Cantey Hanger, a large law firm also based in Fort Worth.

Davis' charitable giving has paled in comparison to her income, the Tribune reports.

The senator donated $2,700 in 2010, compared with $515 in 2011 and $950 last year, her  returns show.

The income data came from tax schedules for business and partnership income, the Tribune reports.

Davis made most of her money in 2012 in her legal work: $154,212. That compared with $52,691 in 2011 and $33,346 in 2010, according to the returns.

Newby Davis has numerous public-sector clients, the Tribune reports. They include the North Texas Tollway Authority, the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Board, and the Fort Worth Independent School District.

Davis has declined to release a complete list of the public-sector clients her firm has served, the Tribune reports. She stopped accepting new legal clients last month, campaign officials said.
