Former assistant Watergate special prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks says President Donald Trump's actions are "far worse than those of President Richard Nixon" and if Congress fails to act, "the current president and all future incumbents will be emboldened to act as though they are above the law because he and they will be."
Wine-Banks made the comments in a Chicago Tribune letter to the editor arguing for impeaching Trump.
Wine-Banks was the U.S. Department of Justice Assistant Watergate Special Prosecutor responsible for cross-examining Nixon's secretary about the 18½ minute gap on the Watergate tapes.
The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday scheduled its first impeachment hearing. The announcement comes one day after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said his panel would work through the Thanksgiving holiday recess to compile a report about its findings from closed-door depositions and public hearings.
Wine-Banks says the evidence "publicly available establishes impeachable offenses beyond a reasonable doubt and leaves no alternative but for Congress to act."
