Even Democrats Think Warren's Attacks on Brown Go Too Far

Even Democrats now believe Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is wrong for attacking her election opponent, Sen. Scott Brown as an extremist.

Brown, a pro-choice Republican from Massachusetts, had Democrats in his corner after Warren, labeled him an extremist on abortion rights and tried to link him to Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, whose remarks on rape were condemned.

“The name-calling has got to stop. They are ignoring the personality and the background of the real candidate who is Scott Brown because it is difficult to go after a moderate Republican unless you vilify him,” Konnie Lukes, a pro-choice Democrat and former mayor of Worcester told the Boston Herald.

“The Democrats are seeking to bypass the facts of Scott Brown’s public service and his personal history by rearing the ugly head of extreme right-wing politics,” Lukes, who has endorsed Brown, told the paper. “I think it’s a below-the-belt reaction.”

Warren told reporters last week, “Remember, Scott Brown got on this train when he voted against equal pay for equal work, when he decided to become a co-sponsor of an amendment that would deny women access to birth control, and when he stood up and said, ‘Yay, Mitt Romney,’ who said he was going to get rid of Planned Parenthood, and, ‘Yay, Paul Ryan,’ who’s out there on a bill wanting to redefine rape. Scott Brown is in this one up to his neck.”

Another Democrat, former state Rep. Anthony Verga, also criticized Warren’s attack. “That’s extremism,” he told the Herald. “Extremism is the worst part of politics and it doesn’t make any difference what party you belong to. I’ve found Brown to be very open-minded and a moderate.”

Brown said Warren’s comments showed she was desperate. “There’s a reason why she’s getting desperate,” he said, according to the Herald. “It’s because I’m surging in the polls.”
