Initiative Aims to Add 1M Hispanic Registered Voters by 2020

A campaign to add one million Hispanic registered voters by 2020 is currently being prepared, Politico reported Tuesday.

The initiator of the plan is Voto Latino, a group committed to engaging and empowering Hispanics in politics.

The group said the proposed $7 million initiative, called Somos Mas (We Are More), will focus on seven states:

  1. Texas.
  2. Nevada.
  3. Colorado.
  4. Arizona.
  5. New Mexico.
  6. Florida.
  7. California.

Voto Latino’s president and CEO María Teresa Kumar pointed out the political potential of Hispanics, saying there will be 12 million new young voters by the 2020 election, two-thirds of them of color - and that 60 percent of Latinos are under 33 years old.

The initiative comes as Voto Latino adds three members to its board, including former Housing Secretary Julián Castro, who is considering a presidential bid of his own in 2020.

The plan also comes after another Hispanic advocacy group, the Latino Victory Project, released a new online tool earlier this month to help prospective candidates run in districts where Hispanics are underrepresented, according to The Hill.

The interactive map cross-references Latino populations for candidates running at the federal, state and local level across the nation and aims to increase the power of Hispanics at the ballot box.

"What this tool does is it allows candidates, party committees, our community to be strategic in thinking about where to invest in candidates, in races and in our future,” Latino Victory Project president Cristobal Alex told The Hill.

Alex also said President Donald Trump’s election victory was a wakeup call to get more Latinos involved in politics.

"What I believe is the silver lining of Trump's presidency is he's become the greatest Latino political organizer in history,” he said.
