While a majority of respondents to a recent Monmouth University poll said they are interested in seeing the tax returns of the presidential candidates, that thought seems mostly to reflect their dislike for Republican Donald Trump, writes Philip Bump at The Washington Post's "The Fix" blog.

The number of respondents identifying as Democrats give roughly the same figure (80 percent or higher) when asked whether it is important for candidates to release their tax returns, whether they think Trump has not released his returns because he is "hiding something," whether they hold an unfavorable view of Trump and whether they plan to vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Republicans, on the other hand, think by just more than half (54 percent) that it is not important for Trump to release his tax returns. And 47 percent of them think he is right in saying he shouldn't do so because he is under audit by the IRS, the reason Trump has long claimed for not releasing his returns like presidential candidates have done for decades.

Independents don't tend to trust either candidate. They are just as skeptical of Clinton's family foundation appearing to have ties to her work as secretary of state during President Barack Obama's first term.

Of those polled, 33 percent said they had favorable opinion only of Clinton, 24 percent were favorable only of Trump, 2 percent found both favorable, and 35 percent found neither favorable.

"In other words, the tax poll numbers don't really tell us anything about how Americans feel about taxes," Bump wrote. "But they tell us a lot about how people feel about the candidates, which is why, after 440 days of campaigning, Trump is trailing the way that he is."
