Voters overwhelmingly favor term limits for members of Congress — and want their congressmen and senators to support them as well, a new poll showed Thursday.
In the McLaughlin & Associates survey, 82 percent of voters said they approve of a constitutional amendment that would impose term limits on those elected to the House and Senate.
In addition, 79 percent of voters think it is important — and 54 percent think it is "very important" — for President Donald Trump to stick with his campaign promise to support term limits by calling on Congress to vote for them.
The survey also found 73 percent of voters are more likely — and 42 percent "much more likely" — to vote for a congressional candidate who supports implementing term limits.
The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
"The support for term limits is strong, broad and intense, to vote for members of Congress who will vote 'yes' on term limits, and against those who will vote 'no' against term limits for members of Congress," the pollster concluded.
