Veterans advocates are calling on President Donald Trump to push North Korea to return the remains of American troops killed during the Korean War during his summit with leader Kim Jong Un, Stars and Stripes reports.

"As the leader of the free world, we urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that those who paid the ultimate price for freedom during the Korean War are finally returned home to their families," wrote Keith Harman, Veterans of Foreign Wars commander in chief, in a letter addressed to Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Defense Secretary James Mattis.

Over 7,000 American service members from the Korean War remain unaccounted for, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

The United States was allowed to participate in joint searches with the North Korean military between 1990 and 2005, recovering 229 sets of American remains from 33 operations, until then-President George W. Bush canceled the agreement citing concerns about the safety of Americans participating in the searches.

"For the families of those who never returned, the passage of time does not heal their wounds," Harman continued. "For them, the days became weeks, and the weeks became months, then years, and now, sadly, decades."

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, whose country still has over 120,000 Korean War troops unaccounted for, said last week that "when the South-North relations improve, we will push first for the recovery of remains in the Demilitarized Zone. We will also be able to retrieve the remains of U.S. and other foreign soldiers who participated in the war."
