President Donald Trump's wants to "silence us in obedience" with his attacks against political opponents who are also people of color, Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser in former President Barack Obama's White House, said Monday, after she and almost 150 African-Americans from the administration spoke out in an opinion piece for The Washington Post.

"What we said in this letter is we're not going to be sitting idly by," Jarrett told CNN's "New Day" about the article, written in support of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who came under fire from Trump earlier this month.

"We're Americans, we're patriotic, we love our country," Jarrett said Monday. "One of the important ways that you demonstrate that love is by speaking up when you see behavior that you think is divisive and destructive to our country."

Trump continued his attacks over the weekend with tweets against Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Jarrett said that is part of a pattern on the president's part.

"Anyone who speaks up against the president is fair game for this personal criticism and anger," Jarrett said. "That's not what makes our country strong."

Obama tweeted in support of the opinion piece, and Jarrett said he does not speak out against Trump's rhetoric often because he would have to issue statements "every single day," and it's not enough only to hear from him.
