Some Republicans in Utah are awaiting news from Sen. Orrin Hatch on whether he will retire at the end of his term in 2018, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

Hatch, 83, had previously signaled that he would retire after seven Senate terms, clearing the way for Mitt Romney, former Republican presidential nominee, to make a run for the Senate in 2018, the newspaper reported.

However, he is reconsidering after getting encouragement to run again from President Donald Trump and being praised for his role as Senate Finance Committee chairman in the passage of tax reform legislation, the Examiner reported.

"If Sen. Hatch's selfish clinging to power prevented Utah and the nation from the influence and impact of a possible Sen. Romney, that would be a tragic stain on the Hatch legacy," a Utah Republican insider told the Examiner.

"A lot of Republicans are really frustrated that he's waited this long. It's almost too late for anyone else, except Romney, to mount a campaign," Lavar Webb, publisher at the Utah Policy Daily told the Examiner.

Sources close to the senator said he plans on revealing his decision before the end of the holiday break.

Those sources rejected rumors that he would run for re-election but bow out after two years.

"If he runs, he would be running for the six-year term, despite the urging of some to just serve out the last two years of his chairmanship and retire," a source said, referring to his Finance Committee chairmanship, which is term-limited to end in 2020.

Utah is a Republican stronghold and the last Democratic governor was in 1980. Hatch defeated the last Democratic senator in 1976.

The Salt Lake Tribune named Hatch "Utahn of the Year" in a Monday editorial calling on him to retire.
