Colorado Republican Tom Tancredo, a frequent Newsmax TV guest, has ended his run for governor Tuesday, according to The Denver Post.
Mike McAlpine, Tancredo's campaign manager, confirmed his candidate's withdrawal to the Post.
"Tom never wants to be in the position where he would win the primary and not win the general," McAlpine told the Post, pointing to a large GOP field that would require a high-priced campaign.
Former Rep. Tancredo, R-Colo. (1999-2009), failed to win the governor's seat in 2010 and 2014. He told NBC-9News he failed to reach a fundraising goal of $150,000 by Jan. 15, having raised only half of that.
After the news broke, Tancredo, an immigration hardliner, tweeted "snowflakes" can now "come out of their safe places."
Top Colorado governor GOP candidates, including state Treasurer Walker Stapleton and state Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, will compete to pick up Tancredo's support, according to the report. Gov. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., is leaving the governor's mansion due to term limits.
