Texas Democratic Rep. Gene Green has announced that he will not run for re-election next year after serving more than two decades in Congress, Politico reported on Tuesday.

Green, a longtime member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, represents the Houston area and was first elected in 1992.

He is the sixth Texan to leave the House, as four Republicans and one other Democrat have already announced they will retire, Dallas News reported.

The period to file for the March primary ballot ends on Dec. 11.

Following the announcement, two state legislators already have said they will join the race to succeed him, and several others also are thought to be considering their candidacy, Chron reported.

Green's 29th Congressional District is all but certain to stay in Democratic hands, because it has a predominately Hispanic population, according to The Texas Tribune.

"Serving as an elected official is one of the greatest honors our country can bestow on a person," Green said in a statement. However, he said "I think that it is time for me to be more involved in the lives of our children and grandchildren. I have had to miss so many of their activities and after 26 years in Congress, it is time to devote more time to my most important job of being a husband, father and grandfather."
