Michelle Obama says U.S. Senate candidate and current U.S. Rep. Gary Peters deserves to succeed retiring Michigan Democrat Sen. Carl Levin.
The first lady appeared Friday with Peters in heavily Democratic Detroit. She sought to rally support behind Peters, who leads Republican Terri Lynn Land in most polls.
Obama says Peters understands "what Michigan families are going through."
She also stumped for Democratic gubernatorial challenger Mark Schauer. The race is tight though some recent polls show GOP Gov. Rick Snyder with a slight edge.
The first lady will appear later Friday in Des Moines, Iowa, with Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Braley. He's also in a tight race with Republican Joni Ernst.
Last week, Land appeared with former presidential candidate Mitt Romney. He plans to campaign with Ernst on Sunday.
