Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Kentucky residents that the $1.5 trillion Republican tax plan signed last week by President Donald Trump "will help put the sluggish economic growth and stagnant paychecks behind us and finally help more Kentucky families get ahead."

"In addition to lowering tax rates, the bill will nearly double the standard deduction, significantly expand the child tax credit, and protect key provisions like the adoption tax credit," McConnell said in an op-ed Tuesday in The Richmond Register, which serves central Kentucky.

"The bill we passed will also unleash the potential of the American economy by making it easier for small businesses to create new jobs," McConnell said, noting that one study estimated that the tax cuts would create more than 4,400 new jobs statewide.

They would be "delivering relief to families who are still enduring the effects of the Great Recession," the majority leader said. "Our bill will also encourage businesses to stop shipping investments and jobs overseas, keeping them right here at home."

He praised the elimination of the Obamacare mandate — which has "saddled many Kentuckians with a burden too heavy to bear" — and slammed Democrats for stripping a provision to provide funding for Berea College, offering tuition-free education to low-income students.

"Democrats in the Senate chose to strike this provision moments before final passage of the bill," McConnell said, adding that he will work with GOP Rep. Andy Barr, Berea College, "and my Senate colleagues to fix this.

"I was proud to pass this legislation to take more money out of Washington’s pocket," he concluded, "and to put more money back into the pockets of Kentucky families."
