Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's top adviser and son-in-law, still has interim security clearance, while his application for permanent clearance is being reviewed, according to Politico.

Many senior White House officials have gotten permanent clearance, but interviews and paperwork for Kushner — who has been with the administration since the first day — are still in the works. Some officials got their clearance as much as five months ago, the report said.

Kushner's status allows him to see sensitive material, and it remains valid unless it is revoked, according to sources.

The White House said that there is a backlog of approvals due to the amount of Trump officials that would be receiving security clearance for the first time. The time frame is "completely normal," the White House said, Politico reported.

"When you have people who have never had one before and they have massive financial and foreign connection and a staggering amount of business interests, like some of the people accompanying Trump, it wouldn't be unheard of," Mark Zaid, a prominent security clearance lawyer, said in Politico.

Leslie McAdoo Gordon, a lawyer who has worked in security clearances, said that those who the president needs are moved forward quickly. "From everything you read, it's apparent there are issues there. It's a labyrinthine process, but it's usually pretty fair and transparent," Gordon said.

The top members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are pressing Kushner for documents for its Russia investigation. Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., wrote a letter to Kushner's lawyer with the request.
