Carina Driscoll, the stepdaughter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and a candidate for mayor of Burlington, Vermont, could face controversy over her mother Jane Sanders' ties to Burlington College, Fox News reported Monday.

Jane Sanders was president of Burlington College from 2004 through 2011. Her business, Vermont Woodworking School, received payments from Burlington College from 2009 to 2012, according to the report.

"It speaks to the way she does business," said Carol A. Moore, who succeeded Sanders as Burlington College president. The college closed in 2016 over inability to pay debts.

Moore said in the Fox News report that Driscoll took advantage of her mother's connection to the college. "The partnerships and the financial agreements were brought to the board by Jane Sanders and developed by Jane Sanders and Carina Driscoll," said Moore, who presided over the closing of Burlington College and now is president of South Carolina's Columbia College.

A federal grand jury has heard testimony over a $10 million loan to the school in 2010. A local attorney also has accused Jane Sanders of bank fraud in the matter, The Burlington Free Press reported in January.

Driscoll is running as an independent in the Burlington mayoral race and is endorsed by Vermont's Progressive Party. The election is March 6.

"It's important to me that I enter this campaign on my own," Driscoll said when she announced her mayoral run in December.

Driscoll later said on social media that her stepfather inspired her to run. "I am Bernie's daughter, and am one of the thousands of people across this country inspired by Bernie to lead during this challenging time," she said.

Our Revolution, a group that grew out of the Sanders campaign, has endorsed Driscoll.
