A former Republican lawmaker and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations blasted President Donald Trump in an opinion piece published this week.

Former Sen. John Danforth, R-Mo., wrote in The Washington Post that Trump is not a true Republican because of one main reason: he stands against having a unified nation.

"We are the party of Abraham Lincoln, and our founding principle is our commitment to holding the nation together. This brought us into being just before the Civil War," Danforth wrote before citing a line from the GOP's first national convention.

"That founding principle of the party is also a founding principle of the United States. Even when we were a tiny fraction of our present size and breadth, the framers of our Constitution understood the need for holding ourselves together, whatever our differences."

Trump critics have criticized him for using divisive language during his campaign and during his presidency. His response to the recent violent riots demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia during which he blamed both sides — including the white supremacists who had gathered in the college town — drew anger from both sides of the aisle and even his own administration.

Danforth argued that Trump does not stand for the Republican party.

"We are the party of the Union, and he is the most divisive president in our history. There hasn't been a more divisive person in national politics since George Wallace," he wrote.

"To my fellow Republicans: We cannot allow Donald Trump to redefine the Republican Party.

"Our country needs a responsibly conservative party. But our party has been corrupted by this hateful man, and it is now in peril."
