Trump's Lawyer Ty Cobb Fooled by Email Prankster on Russia Probe

Trump's Lawyer Ty Cobb Fooled by Email Prankster on Russia Probe

Friday, 08 September 2017 06:14 PM EDT

An email prankster pretending to be worried about his White House social media gig reportedly told special counsel Ty Cobb that ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former national security adviser Michael Flynn had "issues" that might cause the Russia investigation "to linger."

"I've been really worried recently about the whole Russian situation," wrote the prankster — who tweets under @SINON_REBORN.

"The White House will be okay won't it? I love my job, and the people I work with, I don't want the dream to end up derailing."

Business Insider reported it was provided the posts.

Cobb replied that neither President Donald Trump nor the White House had anything to worry about.

"I have great confidence there is nothing there implicating the President or the White House," he responded, BI reported. "Manafort and Flynn have issues separate and apart from the WH that will cause the investigation to linger but am hoping we get a clean bill of health soon. Best, Ty."

Cobb, asked to comment on the exchange, told BI: "No idea — it is a felony, of course, to impersonate a government official, of course, or to conspire to."

Cobb's cool confidence comes as Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the FBI's Russia investigation, is reportedly digging into the firing of ex-FBI Director James Comey and the drafting of a statement for Donald Trump Jr. about a meeting he had with two Russians at Trump Tower in June 2016.

But his reading on Manafort and Flynn wasn't far off, a former federal prosecutor told BI.

"This isn't far off from a reasonable legal analysis based on what we know publicly," Renato Mariotti told the outlet. "We know Manafort has serious potential liability given the search warrant executed at his home, but that could be for something discrete like a false disclosure. Ditto with Flynn."

Nevertheless Cobb's analysis is "interesting" because "he presumably has interviewed all of the relevant witnesses and read the documents," Mariotti added.

"He knows more than we know."
