President Donald Trump does not realize realize what he is doing to the country with his frequent attacks on Twitter, and he should be "muzzled," Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said Tuesday in the wake of the president's slam on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

"He has to be muzzled on Twitter," Rep. Speier, one of several lawmakers calling for Trump's resignation in the wake of accusations of sexual harassment, told MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports." "He doesn't realize what he's doing to foreign powers. He is embarrassing the country, and we all need to be speaking up about behavior that is unbefitting the president of the United States."

Tuesday afternoon, Speier, along with 59 other female Democratic representatives, called for Trump's resignation. She told Mitchell before their press appearance the movement is "consequential."

"Women are standing up and saying loudly and clearly, we will not be treated as property," she said. "We are not going to allow for sexual harassment in the workplace, and I think the conduct that is unbefitting the president of the United States is something that we have the right to look at."

Speier, before coming on Mitchell's program, spoke out on Twitter against Trump's tweet, in which he accused Gillibrand of being a "total flunky" for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and who "would do anything" while "begging" for campaign contributions in Trump's office.

Gillibrand responded on Twitter.

Speier told Mitchell that Trump "definitely" should delete his tweet about Gillibrand, but she knows he "doesn't listen to counsel whatsoever."

"It's a cancer growing in the presidency that should be alarming to all of us," she said. "No human being should talk to another human being in those terms in that manner, and the fact he's talking to Twitter, he will do anything that is expedient to him at the moment. That is not the way to run a country, and that is not what I believe the American people are looking for in a leader."

She also commented Trump has "shown a predilection for misogyny in the past," with his treatment for women.

"The way he talked about women on 'Access Hollywood' suggests that he sees them as just toys, and those who he can play with and even torment," Speier said. "I think that it's going to have a significant impact on his presidency, and I don't think he knows the thin ice he's operating under right now."
