President Donald Trump, minutes after lambasting the media for spreading "fake news" concerning Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, welcomed reporters and editors to his White House Christmas party Friday afternoon with a friendly greeting.

Trump's remarks lasted only a few minutes, and he spent a few minutes more shaking hands before leaving, unlike former presidents who have stayed for a couple hours to take photos with members of the media, reports Politico.

“Melania and I are delighted to welcome you to the White House and I want to wish you a very Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas and a wonderful, wonderful new year,” Trump, accompanied by the first lady, told the media members.

He also lauded his "friends in the media" for having "great stamina."

"We’ve been all around the world, just got back from a big one in Asia," Trump said. "You spent days away from your families and this afternoon I hope you’re going to be able to enjoy a little time with your spouses and loved ones right here at the people’s house, a special place, and honestly in many ways very special people — at least many of you.”

Some of Trump's senior administration dropped in for the party, including White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, and aide Omarosa Manigault, and others either stayed a short time or skipped the party.

The party had been scheduled for 2 p.m., shortly after former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty of lying to the FBI, sparking a media frenzy.

Trump appeared after 3 p.m. and after he'd posted his Tillerson tweet.

A reporter attending the event said there were many questions for the president, but not during the party.

“It’s such a newsy day, here we are having a party in the middle of it,” he said. “That was a little bit odd.”

Linda Feldmann, Washington bureau chief for The Christian Science Monitor, said the party was much like those in the past, including "the legendary lamb chops," except Trump and his wife did not pose for photographs with members of the media.
