President Donald Trump's now-disbanded voter fraud commission bought Texas voter registration data that specifically asked that Hispanic surnames be flagged, The Washington Post reports.

Citing newly released documents showing notarized forms, the Post reported that Ronald Williams II of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity checked a box on two Texas voter data forms asking that "Hispanic surname flag notation" be included, the Post reports.

"It's a complete surprise to me," former voting commission vice chairman, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, told the Post. "Mr. Williams did not ask any member of the commission whether he should check that box or not, so it certainly wasn't a committee decision."

None of the near 50 million Texas records were turned over to the commission, chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, due to a lawsuit filed by voting rights advocates, the Post reported.

Trump disbanded the voter fraud panel Jan. 3 over the rash of federal and state lawsuits that were filed and pushback from states regarding the universally panned effort.

Trump established the committee, asserting that millions of illegal votes were cast in the 2016 election that prevented him from winning the popular vote.

The commission paid Texas $3,500 for the 49.6 million records that would have included active voters, voters with an outdated or inaccurate address, among other data, including the flags for Hispanic last names, the Post reports.

"Somebody affirmatively checked that box," Democratic voting commission member and Maine secretary of state Matthew Dunlap told the Post. "Right now on its face, in my view, it looks bad, and it looks bad to a lot of people."

Liberal watchdog American Oversight filed a public records request with Texas on Friday to obtain communications between the disbanded panel and state voting officials, the Post reports.
