The fight to allow importations of prescription drugs into the U.S. could get a boost by President-elect Donald Trump's pledge to lower drugs prices and give Americans more options, The Hill reports.

Advocates for allowing Americans to buy prescription drugs from outside the U.S. hope Trump will help push their efforts through Congress, according to the website.

"I'm hopeful. There's a different political landscape out there, so it's in a sense more possible than ever, and it's something American consumers really want," The Hill quoted Gabrel Levitt, president of the Prescription Justice Action Group, a nonprofit that supports drug imports.

"Given the political winds, I'm optimistic that we could see legislative reforms to help more Americans obtain lower cost imported medications."

President Barack Obama rejected the idea of bringing in prescription drugs from outside the U.S., but it has the support of Trump, who is looking to lower drug prices, The Hill reported.

But others have argued importing prescription medication could possibly bring unsafe drugs into the U.S. and pharmaceutical companies have strongly opposed the proposal.

Still, Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Miss., reintroduced legislation that would allow the importation of prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has called on his colleagues to "step up to the pharmaceutical industry" and "fight for the American consumer."

The Senate voted 52-46 against one measure last week, pushed by Sanders, that would have allowed American pharmacists and individuals with a valid prescription to purchase drugs from Canada, USA Today reports.

Sanders said he will meet with the Democrats who opposed the measure in an effort to turn them around, according to the newspaper.
