A surprise unveiling of a golden statue of former President Donald Trump drew a mixed reaction Friday at the Florida hotel where the Conservative Political Action Conference was being held.
As it was being wheeled through a hallway at least one onlooker was overheard saying "awesome" in a video. Another person was overheard saying: "That is so cool."
Still, others ridiculed the statue. Newsweek noted many online were making biblical references about idolizing false gods and the golden calf Moses destroys in the Old Testament.
Tommy Zegan, a California-based artist, says he created the Trump statue to combat multiple pieces of art ridiculing the former president.
"Two years ago, when I saw all those statues of naked Trump and Trump on a toilet, I said, 'You know what? I can do better,'" Zegan told CNN.
