President Donald Trump hit back Friday at critics who slammed him for praising Australia's national healthcare system, taking to Twitter to say that "everybody" has a better one than the U.S.

Here's the president's post:

Trump Thursday praised Australia's system, called Medicare, at a meeting with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in New York City.

Australia's government-financed healthcare system exists alongside private insurance. It has long come under attack by conservatives.

"We have a failing healthcare – I shouldn't say this to our great gentleman, and my friend from Australia, because you have better healthcare than we do," Trump said.

The president also lauded the American Health Care Act, which the House narrowly passed earlier Thursday and sent over to the Senate.

Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders explained Friday that President Trump was "simply being complimentary of the prime minister" with the remark – "and I don’t think it was much more than that.”

But Trump's comments came under sharp attack by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who could not contain his laughter in an MSNBC interview.

"Wait a minute . . . the president has just said it," Sanders said.

"Let's take a look at the Australian healthcare system," the former Democratic presidential candidate continued. "And let's move — maybe he wants to take a look at the Canadian system or systems throughout Europe.

"Thank you, Mr. President."
