President Donald Trump on Thursday accused House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., of corruption by overstepping his authority in leading the impeachment inquiry.
"Corrupt politician Adam Schiff's lies are growing by the day. Keep fighting tough, Republicans, you are dealing with human scum who have taken Due Process and all of the Republican Party's rights away from us during the most unfair hearings in American History," Trump said in a pair of tweets early Thursday morning. "But we are winning big, and they will soon be on our turf."
Trump later tweeted a quote he attributed to attorney Sam Dewey: "'The new House Resolution gives Adam Schiff (the most dishonest man in politics) the power unilaterally to release edited transcripts. Rule 10 gives Chairman Schiff absolutely no jurisdiction. Subpoenas issued as part of Dems' Impeachment inquiry are illegal.'
"'Nothing gives Schiff jurisdiction over Impeachment.'"
Schiff said at the conclusion of his opening statement in the House impeachment inquiry on Thursday: "In the coming days, Congress will determine what response is appropriate. If the president abused his power and invited foreign interference in our elections, if he sought to condition, coerce, extort, or bribe a vulnerable ally into conducting investigations to aid his reelection campaign and did so by withholding official acts — a White House meeting or hundreds of millions of dollars of needed military aid — it will be up to us to decide, whether those acts are compatible with the office of the presidency."
