President Donald Trump called Roy Moore a "really great guy" after the former chief justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court won the Republican runoff for a U.S. Senate seat.
Trump had endorsed Moore’s opponent in the race, Sen. Luther Strange.
But in an early morning tweet on Wednesday, Trump said he had spoken with Moore for the first time:
The president had tweeted multiple times about Strange leading up to the runoff, The Hill noted. But those tweets disappeared Tuesday night, according to the website. Moore won with 57 percent of the vote.
At one point, late in the campaign, Trump had openly pondered whether he made a mistake endorsing Strange and announced he would campaign for Moore if he won the race, the Washington Post noted.
