President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has no plans to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
In an early morning tweet, Trump said:
"Despite requests, I have no plans to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Maybe someday in the future. I am sure he is an absolutely lovely man!"
Trump's statement appears to be a response to Rouhani's rejection Monday of overtures from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the weekend.
Pompeo opened the door to a meeting over the weekend, suggesting that Trump was willing to meet Rouhani.
"He's happy to talk with folks at any time," Pompeo said in a pre-recorded interview with NBC's "Meet the Press." "The president's been pretty clear about that."
