Donald Trump quickly fired back at Ted Cruz on Tuesday, charging the Texas senator with becoming "more and more unhinged" and unfit to be president after Cruz angrily trashed him as "pathological liar" and "serial philanderer" for whom "morality does not exist."

"Cruz is a desperate candidate trying to save his failing campaign. It is no surprise he has resorted to his usual tactics of over-the-top rhetoric that nobody believes," Trump said, in a statement issued by his campaign.

"Over the last week, I have watched Lyin’ Ted become more and more unhinged as he is unable to react under the pressure and stress of losing, in all cases by landslides, the last six primary elections --- in fact, coming in last place in all but one of them.

"Today’s ridiculous outburst only proves what I have been saying for a long time, that Ted Cruz does not have the temperament to be President of the United States."

The war of words comes as the results of Tuesday’s Indiana primary will likely determine whether Cruz’s campaign for the GOP presidential nomination will continue.

Earlier, Cruz had said of Trump during a campaign appearance in Indiana: "Whatever lie he's telling in that minute he believes it. But the man is utterly amoral. Morality does not exist for him."

Cruz also tore into a Trump's love life, calling the thrice-married, onetime playboy as a "serial philander" who "boasts about it."

"This is not a secret, he's proud of being a serial philander. I want everyone to think about your teenage kids. The president of the United States talks about how great it is to commit adultery," Cruz said.

"How proud he is, describes his battle with venereal disease as his own personal Vietnam. That's a quote from the Howard Stern show. Do you want to spend the next five years with your kids bragging about infidelity?"

In addition, Trump called Trump a "narcissist," the likes of which "I don't think this country has ever seen."

The Hill opined that the bitter and unusual attacks suggests Cruz's campaign "might be nearing a breaking point" as Trump inches closer to the delegate count of 1,237 he needs to clinch the nomination.
