During Donald Trump's speech Wednesday in Cincinnati, the presumptive GOP nominee made several references that Newt Gingrich would "be involved" in a Trump administration.

"I'm not saying anything — and I'm not telling even Newt anything, but I can tell you in one form or another, Newt Gingrich is going to be involved with our government," Trump said.

Does that mean Trump intends to pick Gingrich as VP? It should, writes Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist.

Hemingway gave four reasons why Gingrich should be the choice for VP:
  • He is adept at criticizing the candidate without getting crossways with him.
  • He would take advantage of talking-point days like Tuesday when the FBI criticized Hillary Clinton over her email scandal.
  • He is a policy maven, which Trump sorely needs.
  • He would be a reassuring presence to conservatives.
Republican strategists voiced their displeasure that there was no coherent response and attack plan in place to go after the FBI and Clinton on Tuesday once the agency cleared her of wrongdoing but criticized her for being careless.

Hemingway writes there's no way that happens again with Gingrich on the ticket.

"Trump sold himself to Republican voters as the only candidate willing to go for the jugular against Clinton," Hemingway writes.

"And yet the day after FBI Director James Comey eviscerated Clinton for her mishandling of classified information, just before inexplicably recommending she be allowed to get away with it, Trump is talking about a Disney princess movie and defending himself against claims he's anti-Semitic."

In her conclusion, Hemingway says Gingrich would bring political expertise and credibility to a candidate and his campaign that have been sorely lacking in both.

"If Gingrich were named as a vice president who essentially operated as a chief of staff, many nervous Republicans who are looking on at Trump in horror might be convinced to support him enthusiastically," Hemingway said.
