President Donald Trump’s refusal to extend the federal program for temporary protected status (TPS) could lead to an increase in illegal immigration, according to an analysis by The Washington Post.
Presidents from both parties, until Donald Trump, regularly extended TPS protections, which gives temporary status, but not a path to citizenship, for foreign national that are present in the U.S. from certain countries, and shields them from deportation proceedings even if they are in the country illegally. It also allows them to work legally, The Post noted.
The Post says TPS protection increases immigrants’ financial support for their families in their home countries, nearly tripling the amounts in some cases, because the TPS immigrants are allowed to work legally.
Because of that allowance, sending a family member to another country to send back money helps family income become more stable, which leaves more incentive for other family members to stay in their countries.
The Trump administration is also facing legal issues over ending TPS. In July, a judge denied the Trump administration’s bid to throw out a lawsuit that alleges that the administration’s decision to cancel TPS status for Haitian, Salvadoran, and Honduran immigrants was racially motivated.
