President Donald Trump is expected to unveil a proposal Sunday to urge states to raise the age permitting purchases of certain guns and allowing school staff to carry concealed weapons, while supporting a ban on bump stocks, sources told The Wall Street Journal.

The moves come after various talks, meetings, and town halls on school safety, background checks, and gun laws in the weeks following the murder of 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The Justice Department had already announced the bump stock ban proposal Saturday, which now requires Office of Management and Budget approval.

"President Trump is absolutely committed to ensuring the safety and security of every American, and he has directed us to propose a regulation addressing bump stocks," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.

"To that end, the Department of Justice has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget a notice of a proposed regulation to clarify that the National Firearms and Gun Control Act defines 'machine gun' to include bump stock type devices."

President Trump's next initiative is to lift the "gun free zones" at schools for qualified conceal carry permit holders, including teachers. Polling has shown that goal has mixed, if not negative, support.
