President Donald Trump’s new limousine, which cost $1.5 million and is made to protect against all kinds of attacks, is the latest in a long line of customized vehicles made for the president, NBC News reports.
The limo, nicknamed “The Beast” after the one used for former President Barack Obama’s first inauguration, is made to look like an elongated Cadillac XT6, but is actually based on a highly modified Chevrolet Kodiak.
It’s one of a dozen made under a contract first estimated at $15.8 million. It’s designed to help the president survive any kind of attack from a terrorist or an assassin, and if the commander in chief is injured, it is fully outfitted with a variety of medical supplies and a refrigerator full of blood matching the president’s type.
The Secret Service does not provide specific details on the safety measures, but the walls are an estimated eight inches thick, and the windows make the doors as heavy as those on a 757 jet. It can drive on flat tires, seal its interior from biological attacks, and even create a smokescreen, deploy tear gas, or spray an oil slick to evade pursuing vehicles.
Some of Trump’s fellow world leaders, like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, also have upgraded their presidential vehicles. Putin now has a Russian-made armored Mercedez-Benz limo, while Jinping was seen driving a new Chinese-made limo last month in Africa.
