Nearly two weeks into his presidency, Donald Trump has only six Cabinet members in place — an historically low number, The Washington Post reports.

And, the newspaper warned, if the pace doesn't improve, Trump's government is in danger of being historically understaffed.

By comparison, Jimmy Carter had eight Cabinet nominees confirmed on his first day in office. Ronald Reagan had 12 picks in place within two days of taking the presidential oath. Bill Clinton had 13 in place within 24 hours after his inaugural. George W. Bush had 11 confirmed in less than a week after his inauguration. And Barack Obama had seven confirmed shortly after he was sworn in.

Trump had made his cabinet nomination at a historically quick clip, according to the newspaper. Republican leaders had hoped to have as many as seven of the nominees confirmed just hours after Trump was sworn in on Jan. 20.

But Democrats found ways to delay the proceedings, including asking for second hearings and walking out on committee hearings for three separate nominees.

Even the even-tempered Sen. Orin Hatch, R-Utah, had to remark that Democrats "ought to stop posturing and acting like idiots," the Post said.

But the newspaper noted it all could get worse before it gets better. It said Senate Democrats are leaning toward filibustering Trump's Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch. Dealing with the filibuster would likely take up a great deal of time and basically put all other nominations on hold, the Post said.

But the Post said Trump will eventually get his Cabinet.

"The ultimate result was not in doubt," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. "Getting to the ultimate was in doubt."

Trump has slammed Democrats saying they "should be ashamed of themselves" for not confirming his picks, Politico reports.
