President Donald Trump joked Tuesday that his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner has gained a lot of fame in recent weeks.
"Jared has actually become much more famous than me — I'm a little upset at that," Trump said at the White House before meeting with several staffers and Republican leaders. The room broke into laughter.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., then looked at Kushner and quipped, "That's a badge of honor."
The exchange came amid reports that Kushner approached Russian officials in December about setting up an off-the-record communications channel between Trump's team and the Kremlin. Reports say that Kushner inquired about using secure Russian communications facilities on U.S. soil in order to evade electronic eavesdropping by U.S. spy agencies.
