Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California could lose his bid for a ninth term next week if Republicans opposed to supporting Donald Trump for president stay home from the polls, Mother Jones says.
"In his efforts to extend his 16-year tenure as one of California's most powerful Republicans, he's playing a frantic game of catch-up as Election Day nears," the liberal magazine's Bryan Schatz writes of the former chair of the House Oversight Committee.
Schatz says while Republicans maintain an 8-point voter registration advantage in Issa's district, Trump "is doing poorly there," with a recent poll showing Hillary Clinton with a 14-point lead.
"So when Trump tries to boost Issa — as he did … when he tweeted that Issa "is a very good man"— it's not exactly helpful," Schatz writes.
Schatz also points to Issa's opponent Doug Applegate, a retired Marine colonel and trial lawyer, who appeals to military veterans in Issa's district.
"Issa, as one former Marine put it, has been 'slow on his feet' to address veterans' issues,'' Schatz writes. "Another called Issa, who is an Army vet, 'absent' and said he only has time for photo ops," Schatz says.
