Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said President Donald Trump’s decision to call off a retaliatory strike on Iran shows a “more human” side of the commander-in-chief.

In an interview Sunday on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” McCaul said Trump’s decision showed he “exercised restraint” and “was thoughtful and measured.”

“It almost shows a more human element to him,” McCaul said. “A side that we don't normally see. We usually see a president that hits back. Whether it be a tweet or whatever he hits back and now you have Iran hitting a U.S. military asset and he's not hitting back. “

“I know … he has no appetite to go to war in Iran,” McCaul added. “He doesn't want to get dragged into a 10 year, decade war in Iran. He wants to do everything he can to exhaust every other possibility to stop that from happening. He wants Iran to be nuclear free and he thinks this is the best way to do it.”

McCaul also decried the migrant conditions at the southern border the “worse” he’s ever seen, and that Congress is working on legislation that will help relieve the abhorent conditions for children who have no toiletries, blankets or beds.

“We are looking through the draft right now to see what's in it, and it has to be passed soon because [the Departments of Homeland Security and the Health Human Services] will run out of money at the end of this month. And so this is real stuff, I mean they're not going to have money to take care of these children and house and feed them.

He added at “a minimum, we have to pass humanitarian aid to take care of these children. That is the nation we are. We have to take care of these kids.”
