Dr. David Samadi to Newsmax TV: No Harm in Trump Taking Hydroxychloroquine

Dr. David Samadi, the Director of Men's Health at St. Francis Hospital, says there’s no harm in President Donald Trump taking hydroxychloroquine to try to prevent a COVID-19 infection.

Samadi, a board-certified urologic oncologist and expert in robotic prostate surgery, also slammed the media for playing “political football” with news of Trump taking the antimalaria drug.

“What I love about President Trump is that he’s very transparent and he’s very honest and he talks about this. Most presidents that we know, they’re usually very private about this,” Samadi said Thursday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Greg Kelly Reports.”

“So he’s taken the full course of this medication as prophylaxis. Fortunately, there’s no side effects and he has had no issues. We know that this is a safe medication, we don’t expect to have any problems. It’s unfortunate that mainstream media is turning this medication into the biggest political football and there’s a lot of criticism because we’re going to learn in the future that this medication actually saved a lot of lives out there. … If the benefit outweighs the risk, this medication is good for you, especially at the early stages of this disease.

Trump revealed on Monday that he's been taking hydroxychloroquine, along with zinc, to try to prevent an infection. He said the White House physician "didn't recommend" hydroxychloroquine but offered it to him.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned against widespread use and issued a warning against use outside a clinical setting or trial.
