The Trump reelection campaign is using a recent controversy over Goya Foods to appeal to Hispanic voters in several new ads on Spanish-language television and radio stations, The Hill reports.
After Goya Foods CEO lauded President Donald Trump during an event at the White House earlier this month, Democrats ripped the company and called for a boycott of its products.
Now, Trump’s campaign is blasting the “Democrats’ shameful smear campaign against Goya Foods, a beloved Hispanic-owned family business” in two radio ads that will begin airing in Florida, and a third radio ad that will be released “in other regions.”
The ads show Democrats as socialists and extremists and suggest they are "too extreme for Hispanic Americans."
“From Democrats’ support for socialism, to cutting school choice and police funding, they are just too extreme for Hispanic Americans — and Joe Biden is too weak to stand up for us. Now, with the left's assault on Goya, it's clear that not even your abuela's Sazón would be safe in Joe Biden's America,” Latinos for Trump said in a statement in announcing the new ads.
In a television ad, Cuban actress Susana Pérez says, “We sacrificed so much to be free and respected. Now the left has launched a smear campaign against Goya. The brand we love just because Goya is working with President Trump.” Her voice is heard over a video of Cuban refugees being airlifted.
To show that Democrats are learning toward socialism, the ads feature images of Cuban communist leader Che Guevara.
“Oh man, all these leftists are the same. They’re so intolerant. Imagine if they get more power,” says one woman in one of the radio ads that will air in Florida. “I came here to be free. I’m voting for Trump.”
Recent polls indicate that Biden has more support of Hispanic voters than Trump. A July poll by Latino Decisions found that 60% of Latino voters said they would vote for Biden over Trump. An NPR-PBS NewsHour-Marist poll from late June showed a similar result. Of the Latino voters surveyed, 59% said they would back Biden.
