President Donald Trump went after the FBI on Twitter Friday morning, accusing the agency of being "totally unable to stop the national security 'leakers'" and insisting the agency act "now" to stop the flow of classified information to the media.
Trump's volley comes on the heels of reports that FBI Director James Comey refused a White House request to publicly challenge news reports about communications between Trump aides and Russian officials before the inauguration that had been intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies.
CNN reported that Comey rebuffed the White House because the intercepted communications are the subject of a continuing FBI investigation.
Trump has railed repeatedly about leaks of classified information. He issued a string of tweets last week condemning "low-life leakers" and insisting they would be caught.
Politico noted Friday that Trump's administration has taken a number of hits as a result of media reports based on anonymous government sources, including events that led to the forces resignation of his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.
Leaked transcripts of phone conversations the president had with leaders of Mexico and Australia also caused diplomatic problems, Politico said.
