President Donald Trump blasted Democrats saying they "care very little" about the "devastating" impact a government shutdown would have on the U.S. military.

Trump's comments came in a tweet on Thursday morning as lawmakers scramble to pass a spending bill or risk shutting down the government.

CNN reported that if the government does shut down, those in the military would still report to duty, but potentially not be paid.

In another tweet, Trump said he favored funding the Children's Health Insurance Program as part of a long-term solution and not part of a "30-day or short-term extension."

The New York Times noted the tweet hurt the Republicans' strategy to keep the government open past Friday.

The newspaper said Republicans have been pressuring the Democrats to vote for a spending bill that would keep the government funded to Feb. 16. Republicans had hoped that including CHIP funds would entice Democrats to vote for the bill, according to the Times.

The House had planned to vote Thursday on the short-term spending bill that included a six-year extension of the children health program.
