The rocky relationship between New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Donald Trump continued to play out on Friday as the two traded jabs in a heated exchange.
As Cuomo appeared at his daily briefing, Trump was ready to troll the governor on Twitter.
Cuomo began discussing how the state would not fully reopen without more testing and help from the federal government, The New York Times reports.
Before Cuomo finished speaking, Trump blasted out a tweet that the governor, “should spend more time ‘doing’ and less time ‘complaining.’"
“Get out there and get the job done,” the president wrote. “We built you thousands of hospital beds that you didn’t need or use, gave large numbers of Ventilators that you should have had, and helped you with testing that you should be doing.”
Cuomo fired back in real time when a reporter informed him about the tweets, the New York Post reports.
“If he’s sitting home watching TV, maybe he should get up and go to work, right?” Cuomo said.
The president said Cuomo never thanked the federal government and that New York received “far more money, help and equipment than any other state, by far.”
Cuomo refuted that he had already repeatedly thanked the federal government for its assistance.
”I don’t know what I’m supposed to do — send a bouquet of flowers?” he asked.
Cuomo said states should be giving the same financial treatment that big industries are receiving.
“Why don’t you show as much consideration to states as you did to your big businesses and to your airlines?” Cuomo said referring to the $25 billion bailout awarded to the airline industry.
The two leaders have been sparring over the coronavirus crisis. Earlier this week, they clashed over whether the federal government or states have authority on when to make reopening decisions.
